The leaves are yellow, which means it is actually Fall, but the termination dust has yet to arrive - that means there is still time to ride your favorite trails and roads! I recently arrived back inFairbanks after a trip home to see my family. I realized just how lucky we are with the small amount of traffic, the abundant cycle paths and bike lanes available to us. In Sydney, the commuters had to ride on the road for the most part, and in the gutter in many areas. It looked dangerous with the fast and ever-present traffic, but I have to say that for the most part the drivers were very courteous. It was also great seeing so many people riding, and riding same brands that we ride - Gary Fisher and Trek!

Flying into Fairbanks was amazing. The leaves on the trees were so spectacular it made me excited for the season ahead. Snow is visible on the highest peaks, and I had reports that you could find a little in the White Mountains!

We need your help! We are working hard on our NEW SKI TRAIL so help out on Sunday September 28th. See more details below.

Feature Item - Bike Lights

With darkness approaching, it is very important to make sure you are seen on the roads and trails, and even see where you are going. Goldstream Sports has some of brightest lights to make sure you are visible. Our staff have field tested the lights and have made their recommendations:

Tyson commutes to work on a regular basis and highly recommends the Trek Ion 3 and the Gekko for visibility, ease of use and weight.

Lorien uses the Nightpro lights and recommends the Torch. Lorien says the best feature about the Torch is the battery that handles the temperature, provides 1.5 to 3 hours of strong light, and charges easily.

Joel recommends the Trek Flare S. A leg band that not only brightly reflects light, it contains a bright flashing LED. Joel likes the band because it is attached to your leg, which is moving up and down with the pedal, and it is light and motion that is most noticeable to motorists.

Tyson's Tech Tip - Ski Base Prep

With ski season just around the corner, now is the time to start preparing your skis. Tyson Flaharty will keep us up to date on what we should be doing for our skis throughout the season to get the best use and care for our skis.

Tyson's tips:

This time of year I like to take all of my skis out, some still have wax on and some don't. I want to go through all of my skis and redo the base wax. I like to start with a base layer of Swix or Toko base-prep wax on all my skis just to make sure the bases are saturated before I get them on snow. This will make sure all of the bases are happy, as it is bad to ski on unhappy bases.

If your bases are looking really white or scratched up, now is the time to think about stone grinding the bases. Doing this now will give you time to prepare the bases properly so you can go fast as soon as the trails are ready.

After stone grinding or if your skis are fine you need to saturate the bases with wax so they don't oxidize. To do this iron in the first layer of of base prep and hot scrape the wax off, this will ensure that the bases are clean. Then you can go ahead and apply a layer of base prep that you can let fully cool to room temperature. Re-heat this layer with three quick passes to bring the bases back to heat again to allow for more wax penetration. Let this cool to room temperature again. Scrape and brush the bases using any brush at this stage as we are still in the cleaning phase.

If your skis are going to be used in all snow temperatures, start applying colder wax such as CH6 and CH8, to harden the bases, in alternate layers with scraping and brushing in between. When it is time to ski you can pick your wax depending on what temperature it is and you will be set to go. Check the Goldstream Sports website for updated wax recommendations.

For the final brushing of the ski use a copper or a medium to fine steel brush then finish with a white synthetic brush, that is fairly stiff, to polish the base. This should make your skis very happy.

If you have any questions regarding ski base preparation please stop by Goldstream Sports to talk to Tyson or one of our other expert ski technicians. Keep a look out for more of Tyson's Tech Tips as he tests grinds, waxes and skis during races and training.
