Goldstream Sports Newsletter

July 2008, Volume 2

Take the Go By Bike Challenge and enter to win a bike!

Welcome to another Goldstream Sports newsletter. We have been busy tuning-up bikes, hearing great cycling stories and helping customers start their new adventures.

Trek and the 1 World 2 Wheels campaign has started off strong. This is a campaign to get more people riding their bikes to work, the grocery store, school, church or just to visit friends. So far, Trek has had over 5.5 million miles pledged. We are hoping to see the counter turn over to 10 million miles. Come into Goldstream Sports and pledge today! We have been adding to our wall the pledges made by customers willing to trade their driving miles for cycling miles. We're so happy to see customers saving money and not giving all of their hard-earned cash to the evil oil companies.

So far we have had 33 pledges for a total of 7,488 cycling miles. This pledge saves those commuters a total of $1,507 they would normally pay on gas. And they will burn a total 257,936 calories. Their leaving the car at home also saves the Earth from 5,323 pounds of CO2 that would normally be generated by the running of those cars.

But, the most exciting thing about these pledges is until August 31, Trek is giving away a new bike everyday! So, come on in and pledge your miles or do it online. Make sure to choose zip code 99709 so your miles are added to our store miles. We are keeping track of the miles pledged in the Fairbanks area.

Feature Item - Gu, Hammer Gel, Shot Bloks

It is almost Equinox time. Everyday we see runners preparing for the marathon, pushing their bodies to the limit, running up Ester Dome. I give them full credit. I only run if something is chasing me. Give me a bike, or dog team anyday!

But, for those intrepid runners, fueling your body is so important, and now is the time to try out what fuels work best for you and which flavors you can stomach while running. Below is a comparison of gels from the Gu Energy website. Having information on ingredients and values is great, and having a comparison is even better.

Taste is personal, as is the amount of specific nutrients needed. Try out the flavors of Gu, Shot Bloks and Hammer Gel at Goldstream Sports now and stock-up for the Equinox.

We also have Sport Beans back by popular demand!

Sale Item - Nike clothing and shoes 20% off

All Nike jerseys, shorts, shirts, shoes and gloves are 40% off. Grab these deals while stocks last. We have limited quantities of everything, so come and see if we have your size.

Feature Item #2 - Skinz Soft shell travel cases

This light-weight bag bag is easy to pack and easy to stash when you arrive at your destination. It protects your bike from scratches and bumps. It is a hassle free case for those who travel with their bike. With airlines charging an arm and leg for extra baggage, this travel case does not usually attract any overweight fees.

Tech Tip: Riding prepared

With the cooler weather gracing us, this should not prevent you from riding. In fact, riding can be more fun as it is not too hot. There are a few simple ways to make riding more fun in the late summer and fall. Dressing according to the weather is most important. Knees and elbows seem to be the body parts that we forget to cover so why not wear knee and elbow warmers. These are fleecy lined, or even wool, and cover just your elbow area and knee area. It is amazing the difference warm knees make. Your speed increases and the length of time you want to ride also increases.

Make sure you take a rain jacket, even if it does not look like rain, take a packable jacket just in case. We have an ultra lightweight jacket, that is both waterproof and breathable, and it can easily fit in your jersey pocket. For just $35 you can have piece of mind that you will not get wet and not sweat! Great for summer, fall or spring, the O2 cycling jacket is light, bright and breathable.
