The summer weather has been amazing. Yes, there may be long-horned beetles that may or may not bite but I would take those guys over mosquitoes and wasps any day. Maybe it is the warm weather, or perhaps it is the beetles, but either way Joel has gone crazy and has slashed the prices on bikes, trailers and clothing! Hurry up and get these deals while they last - who knows when Joel will regain his sanity!

Kluane Chilkat International Bike Relay photos on Goldstream Sports website

The scenery during the bike relay from Haines Junction, YT to Haines, AK was just beautiful. And, with all of the finely tuned bodies cycling along the highway, it looked even better. Visit our photo gallery from the race and see if you can see yourself!

In this race Fairbanks was well represented with the men sweeping the first three spots in the solo division. The men's team Spawned Out (Manx Quayle, Reese Hanneman, Fred Harbison, and Eric Breitenberger) took first place, Swimmin’ Upstream a team composed of Henry Irving, David Norris, Sergey Streltsov, and Will Coleman placed 2nd.

The high school team riding under the team name of Goofy, Rough, Tough, and Pretty ( Kipp Wilkinson, Wyatt Mayo, Robert Hovda, and Logan Hanneman) placed third. We are still deciding who is who.

Another team of young Fairbanksans also turned in a commendable performance. Jacob Remington, Werner Hoefler, Kelsey Boyer, and Anthony Davis finished 10th in the division.

In the women’s two-person division, Heather Best and Gail Koepf (Best-Koepf Secret) took first place with both riders posting the day’s best individual time for their respective sections.

The women’s four-person team — Kate Bennett, Julie Rowland, Lisa Beattie, and Amanda Byrd ( Luna Galilea) sped to a 2nd place finish in their division. Lisa Beattie posted the fastest time of the day for Leg 3.

Crank Callers, led by Lorien Nettleton (who posted a winning leg time in the mixed category), placed 5th in the 4-person mixed division.

Congratulations to all teams and riders.

Chena Hot Springs Classic

Reese Hanneman once again ruled the road in the Chena Hot Springs Classic bicycle race. Hanneman led a field of more than 50 cyclists who completed the 60-mile race from Fairbanks to Chena Hot Springs Resort.

Hanneman completed to 60-mile ride in cool and rainy conditions in a time of 2 hours, 38 minutes, 17 seconds to outduel three others for the top spot. Fred Harbison took the runner-up spot in 2:38:21, followed by William Coleman in 2:38:29 and Craig Malloy in 2:38:38. Pete Leonard rounded out the top five in 2:39:42. Laura Leblanc was the top female finisher, placing 20th overall in 3:05:12. Samantha Wuttig was second in 3:12:15.

Congratulations to all riders who endured the cold and very wet conditions.

Fireweed 400 this weekend

Hopefully you have all signed up for the Fireweed 400, 200, 100 or 50 which starts on Friday and Saturday at Sheep Mountain.. If you have not signed up you may be out of luck as registration closed yesterday.

Solo 400 riders and 400 team riders start on Friday evening while the other divisions start bright and chirpy on Saturday morning.

Remember to stock up on gels, energy drinks, foods and water bottles at Goldstream Sports.

Good luck to all of the Fairbanks competitors, and remember to enjoy the scenery!

Sourdough Triathlon This weekend

With such a short summer, we are left with so many choices to make. Do I do the Sourdough or do I do the Fireweed? Or do I go fishing?

Those who have chosen to do the Sourdough have my full respect. Swimming in the frigid water, cycling after the swim, and running without a life or death reason after the cycling. PHEW I get tired thinking about it!

Good luck to all of the competitors, and a big special cheer forJoel's wife, Paulette, who will be doing the cycling leg on a three person team.

Tech Tip: Hydration on the go

During exercise, you can lose anywhere from 1 to 2 quarts of perspiration an hour. On rides, you not only lose water, but also vital nutrients. Energy drinks are the best way to replenish your body because they contain the electrolytes and nutrients lost through sweating.

Go For Flavor

Choose an energy drink that also provides carbohydrates to fuel the muscles. But, it's got to be an energy drink you enjoy because if it tastes good, you'll drink more. And, if it tastes bad, you won't drink enough, if any at all.

When you're carrying energy drink in two bottles, lower the concentration in your second bottle because as you fatigue and heat up, you'll probably want less flavor and sweetness. If you're riding hard, it's also important that your energy drink isn't too concentrated. A drink that is too concentrated will slow you down and even dehydrate you.

Try new drinks on training runs, not during a race event. Find the drink you like best and replenishes you best. You can work out which drinks to avoid, and you will avoid stomach cramps as well. Often times, a long ride, such as an off road ride, a hydration pack would work better than the bottles as the hose is easier to drink from and the capacity is larger.

Gauge Your Hydration

Before an event, check your urine. This may be difficult in an outhouse situation, so improvise. Your urine should be pale yellow or clear. Dark yellow and strong smelling urine means that you need to drink a few more glasses of water. Remember that vitamin pills can have a coloring effect as well. Another key sign of proper hydration is having to get up during the night to urinate. Do not over hydrate though this will actually dehydrate you.

Cool It

When the temperatures start soaring, an insulated bottle or hydration system can help keep your water cool, which in turn will help keep your body temperature lower. Also, try freezing water in your bottles the night before, filling the bottle only half way so you can top it off with drink before the ride. The ice in the bottom will chill the liquid for a while. Ice in a hydration pack can also help cool your torso.

Choose your flavor

There are many flavored drinks available including Cytomax and Acelerade. These are both great tasting and provide your body with the carbohydrates and vitamins that your body has lost during exercise. Accelerade has flavors such as mountain berry, orange and lemonade, which are all very tasty. Cytomax has flavors like peachy keen, creamy orange, go grape and vanilla. It is important to know how each drink affects you and the best concentrations. We have a few flavors for you to try before you buy, so come in and test out the flavors.
