Tech tip

Part 1: Putting the skis away

First, clean the skis with a hot wipe. To do this, melt on a layer of warm wax and wipe it off with fiberline while the wax is still liquid. Next, slap a thick layer of warm wax on and store the skis in a warm place out of the sun. Furnace rooms are great places, as they allow the wax to penetrate the ski more fully. This will protect the base from oxidizing and get them ready to be fast for next year.

Part 2: Taking your bike out of storage
Check your brakes before you ride. Check your tires. Look the tire over carefully before you inflate it. Look for any cracks or dry-rot that will compromise the structural integrity of the tire. Inflate the tire, and check again for cracks before riding.
Next, check your chain for stretching (there are a variety of gauges that do this, or stop by and use one of ours). Stretched chains can cause damage to the other drivetrain components, causing wear to the cassettes and chainrings. If the chain is stretched, replace it, otherwise give it some lube. Bike chains need constant protection from the grinding and friction of being ridden, and a thin layer of any kind of bicycle chain lube is a critical place to start.
That should be good enough for starters, if you have any questions, come see us!

Featured item: The Xtracycle Free Radical

Xtracycle is an attachment for your bicycle that will convert any regular bike into a bike that hauls. If you've been thinking of getting a B.O.B. trailer for touring or just carrying a lot of stuff, the Xtracycle deserves a look. Want to get your groceries, or carry enough beverages for everyone you know at once? Or you could use it for hauling tools to and from your garden, or for hauling produce from your garden to the farmer's market, or any number of things. These are awesome, and come by and check it out! It would even make a great touring addition and I'll tell you why: you can carry a ton of stuff with it. Sustainability for the low low price of $549

Wednesday workshop schedules:

Every Wednesday at 6pm we will be holding free, hour-long workshops on the basics of bicycle maintenance. Currently we've planned two regularly rotating workshops through the first part of the season. One will cover on-the-road emergency repairs, like replacing tires, and fixing various things that can happen on the road. The other will be basic drivetrain and brake maintenance and tuning. Both workshops will be as informative as they are enjoyable!
