| While in the midst of winter wonderland, it’s easy to forget that we could be looking at bare ground in as little as 90 days. Here in the interior we are blessed with abundant trails, but usually we bikers use trails built for other uses – old mining roads or power-lines. At Goldstream Sports we’ve been kicking around the idea of putting some effort into designing and building some singletrack designed with mountain bikers in mind. Is anyone interested in riding on some twisty, fun single track? Are you a member of IMBA? Do you have any ideas for cool places to develop new places to ride a bike? Contact Lorien@goldstreamsports.com to share your thoughts, and look for future trail-building updates at the Goldstream Sports website. | ![]() |
One thing we see a lot of in Fairbanks is cold abrasive snow. Everyone uses a lot of cold wax to get better glide in cold conditions when the abrasive snow doesn’t want to give up the glide. A good way to achieve a hard, durable surface that can handle our high abrasion and cold temperatures is to incorporate cold powders with your normal regimen of cold waxes.
To use cold powders, first apply a layer of and cold-temperature wax such as Toko Blue or Swix CH4. Once you have a smooth surface, sprinkle on an even layer of your cold powder of choice. Briefly place your iron on the ski, then pick it up to tack the cold powder in place, and then run the iron tip to tail several times to work it in to the wax. Once the ski has cooled thoroughly, scrape it and brush as normal.
Want to know more about what it takes to achieve agreement between your skis and Fairbanks snow? Joel will take you through everything you need to know about waxing, from cold powder to fluoros. Prepare to learn the science of wax with one of the most trusted wax aficionados. The workshops are free, but to give us an idea of who's coming, please register by calling 455-6520 or email joel@goldstreamsports.com. The next one is kicking off on Friday, February 8. And as always, we have a waxing bench open for use for anyone who wants to use it.
