Welcome to another newsletter. If you haven't been in the store lately you may be in for a surprise. Not only are the employees at Goldstream Sports awesome riders, skiers and mechanics - we are also carpenters! come and check out our new workshop area.
The Pineapple Express has been gracing us with its warm wind and high humidity, but despite the damp weather the riding has not diminished. We still have a few good months left of quality riding before we head into freeze-up. Take advantage of the beautiful Fall colors that are beginning to show around Fairbanks and the Denali area. Touring season is here, and we are excited to help you prepare for that nice long ride you have been planning for a few years. Come on in and let us fit your bike with a rack and panniers, and help you discover this amazing place we live in. Remember that our expert mechanics have a fast turn-around time, and if you bought a bike from us we will make sure your brakes and shifters are working - for free!
Ride at an average of 17 mph over hilly terrain? Enjoy rides that leave you feeling ravenously hungry and deliriously exhausted? Know of some sweet rides around Fairbanks, or other areas? Call the store and let us know if you are interested in joining one of our staff members on some road rides.
All jerseys are 40% off and all bike shorts are 20% off. Interchange Trunk Packs are 10% off. These packs work with the Interchange rack system and snap on and off in seconds.

So, you are riding along feeling great and in the zone. The zone is a favorite place for all bike riders and runners, Legs are working smoothly, heart and lungs in a good even rhythm. Then you look up ahead and a long hill looms before you. That feeling of dread and impending pain that envelopes you before you hit the hill is your worst enemy. You need to set yourself up for the climb and, instead of pessimism, think "No worries! I will eat this hill for breakfast." Dreading the climb is feeding your brain with negativity. Be positive and your body will react positively in return.
Make sure you are fueled up for the climb. Consume an energy supplying food or drink before you start riding, and take with you some boosters such as gels, energy drinks or power bars. Also, make sure your position on the bike is the most efficient - you don't want to be losing your energy through a bad position. Seat post too short, handlebars too far away, seat position off, these are things that can affect your efficiency, not to mention comfort (see July, 2007 Volume 1 Newsletter for fitting your bike).
Practice makes perfect. If you practice climbing you will become better at it. There are a few ways to practice: Attack - ride the hill at 85% of your heart rate, and 3/4 of the way to the top jam hard on the pedals and work at your maximum to the top. Spurts - Ride at 80% of your sustainable power and over the course of the hill, jump back and forth over the redline of your sustainable power for 1 minute at 100% and 2-3 minutes at 80%. Maintain cadence - start ascending at a good cadence (80-85 rpm) and shift to the next hardest gear maintaining your cadence, and then shift back to the easier gear recovering for 2 minutes. Alternate gears to the top.
Soon enough, your zone will extend to the hills, and the once demeaning hill will become just another bump in the road. Good luck and remember to keep hydrated!

You've got the padded shorts, but can you swap out a crank or overhaul the hubs?
Join the mechanics at Goldstream Sports for Park Tool School on Wednesday nights, starting August 8th, and we'll totally geek out over each system of your machine from bottom to top. Park Tool School is a comprehensive bicycle maintenance and repair course. Learn how to true your wheels, inspect and adjust your hubs, tune your derailleurs, drive-train maintenance, tune and adjust the braking system.
The course will be taught using the Park Tool Big Blue Book of Bicycle Maintenance. Tuition is $60 dollars for the whole course, or $30 dollars for individual sessions. Registrations are accepted until the day of the course.
August 8, 6 - 9 pm: Wheels, hubs, tires and tubes
August 22, 6 - 9 pm: Chains, cranks, cassettes, bottom bracket, and derailleurs
August 29, 6 - 9 pm: Rim brakes, disc brakes, handlebars, stems and headsets
For riders interested in learning the basics of day-to-day bicycle upkeep, but don't need the comprehensive overhaul, Goldstream is hosting maintenance workshops on Saturday, August 8 and Saturday, August 25. Bring your bike at noon, and we'll talk tubes and lubes!
