Technical Tip - Choosing a New Cycling Helmet

Buying a new bike helmet should not have to be a painful experience. We will give you a few tips on picking the right helmet for you.

Color may always seem the first decision, but first you must choose a style and the most comfortable. You are going to be wearing the helmet for long periods of time, so comfort is the first step. You want a helmet that fits snug on your head without being too tight. There should no more than 1 inch of movement in either direction, and with the chin-strap fastened, the helmet should not be able to be removed at all - this would defeat the purpose!

Next, look at ventilation. More ventilation is best for those who ride long distances and sweat a lot. With sweating in mind, also look at the sweat control pads. The size of the ventilation holes is a concern for bald people. If you are a little thin on top, you should avoid helmets with large top vents, unless of course you think weird head tans are cool. To avoid the tan-lines, but enjoy the breeze find a good waterproof sunblock.

Once you have the style and fit, then you can look at color. The colors these days range from solid colors, to a cool variety of brights and pastels.

Most companies put UV inhibitors in the plastic to reduce UV degradation. If your helmet is fading, it is very possible that the UV inhibitors are failing.

The Bicycle Helmet Safety Institute has a list of reasons to replace your helmet:

Feature Item - Bob Jogger Strollers

Bob, the trailer makers have come out with some awesome jogger strollers that will make even the most square parents look very hip. Gone are the days of the clunky pram, and pain inducing fabric stroller. The Bob jogger strollers are designed with baby, parent and destination in mind. The strollers have comfortable reclinable seats, low folding canopies and even a window to see baby while you are moving. With front and rear brakes, and suspension, as well as on and off-road tire options, these strollers are made for adventure - whether it be a trip to Pioneer Park or Denali Park. The strollers come in both single and double styles. Visit our store for a selection and test drive (push) one today!

Why am I so tired?

The best thing about always riding your bike is getting to replenish your energy reserves with tons of food. After four to six weeks of 100 + miles a week balanced around the normal workweek time job will burn a lot of fuel, so what you eat becomes more important. Not eating enough food (I’m always hungry), or not eating the right foods can leave you feeling empty.

Eat less fried things:

There might not be a relationship between grease and being tired and slow on a bike, but doughnuts and cheeseburgers are not the most ideal foods for building strength and endurance. There’s no need to completely do away with all the tasty foods, but save the comforting chicken fried steaks for October — spring is the season of light, energy-rich foods.

Eat more good things:

My dietary wishlist includes: breakfasts of granola with yogurt and blueberries, dinners of rice or pasta with meat and veggies (moose and salmon are both perfect foods with lower fats than beef or chicken). Noodles at lunch and all-day snacks of cookies, apples, rice and beans, banana splits, mangoes, pineapple, dried fruit things, and parmesan cheese that Tyson has been eating a bunch of lately. If I have time, I would pretty much be eating all day. Among the chief reasons for bikes being the best invention of all time, they completely justify any kind of dietary choice, meaning cyclists get to eat more and have more fun doing it.
